A boat heads out to open sea between two breakwaters, seen from the air over turquoise water.

Boat hire with or without a skipper in the south of Gran Canaria

A day at sea, with a skipper or at the helm yourself. It is the best way to discover the south coast and to reach coves with no road access.

What it includes

  • With a skipper, if you would rather not think about navigation
  • Without one, if you hold a valid licence
  • Trips along the south coast and the Mogán shoreline
  • Coves and anchorages with no access by land
  • Booked in advance and matched to your stay

With or without a skipper

With a skipper, no licence or experience is needed: a professional handles the boat, chooses the anchorage according to the state of the sea and takes you to the best places to swim. It is the most common option and also the easiest with children on board.

Without a skipper you need a valid licence and recent practice. In exchange, the day is organised entirely as you see fit. Tell us your qualification when booking and we will confirm which boats you may handle.

What you see from the water

The south coast changes completely seen from the sea: cliffs you cannot appreciate from land, small coves between Mogán and Puerto Rico, and clear water a short distance from the shore.

Dolphins are commonly sighted in these waters and, occasionally, turtles. It is not a scheduled activity and cannot be guaranteed, although it happens often.

When to go out

Mornings usually have the flattest sea; in the afternoon the wind comes in, and in the south of Gran Canaria it is steady and predictable. If anyone in the group gets seasick, a morning trip is the safer choice.

The day is chosen when booking and it is worth leaving room: if the marine forecast forces a postponement, having two possible dates within the stay keeps you from losing the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a boat licence?

Only if you want to handle the boat yourself. With a skipper, no licence of any kind is required.

How many people fit on board?

It depends on the boat. Tell us how many you are and we will suggest the best options, without squeezing the group up to the limit.

Can children come along?

Yes, and it is usually very well received. Tell us their ages when booking so the skipper can take them into account when choosing the route and the anchorage.

What happens if the sea is rough that day?

The trip depends on sea conditions and on the supplier's safety judgement. If it has to move to another day, we handle that: which is why it is worth booking with room to spare within the stay.
